About Francesco Bagnaia

Born on January 14, 1997, Francesco Bagnaia is an Italian motorcycle racer who competes in MotoGP as a member of the Ducati Lenovo Team. He won the MotoGP World Riders' Championship in 2022 and 2023.

In 2018, Bagnaia won the Moto2 World Championship. He is the only rider to have won a world championship in the premier class out of all of Valentino Rossi's VR46 Riders Academy graduates. It was also the first for an Italian rider since Rossi himself in 2009 and the first for a Ducati rider in fifteen years.

Italy's Francesco Bagnaia was born in Turin and began riding Minimoto bikes at an early age. In 2009, he won the European MiniGP championship. With the Monlau Competición squad, he made his debut in the pre-GP 125 Mediterranean championship in 2010 and ended the campaign in second place. He competed in the 125cc class at the 2011 Spanish Championships, winning a race and placing third overall. Riding a Honda NSF250R, he finished third in the championship behind Álex Márquez and Luca Amato in the 2012 CEV Moto3 season. He had two-second places and one race victory in seven races. Bagnaia enrolled in and continues to be a member of the VR46 Riders Academy.

In the 2013 Moto3 World Championship, Bagnaia made his Grand Prix debut alongside teammate Romano Fenati on a Honda for Team Italia FMI. Bagnaia's season was unsuccessful because he did not receive a single point from the 17 races in which he competed. His best racing result at Sepang was a 16th-place finish.  In 2014, Bagnaia changed teams and rejoined the newly established Sky Racing Team by VR46, where he once more rode a KTM with Romano Fenati. Bagnaia showed considerable progress in his first seven races, placing in the top 10 five times, after his lack of point accumulation in his rookie year.

Francesco Bagnaia moved up to Moto2 racing for Sky Racing Team VR46 after four seasons in the Moto3 class; he last competed there in 2014. His partner for the 2017 Moto2 World Championship would be Stefano Manzi. Bagnaia finished second in his fourth-ever Moto2 race at Jerez. He qualified in second place for the race at Le Mans and finished second there as well, barely 0.026 seconds behind Thomas Lüthi for the pole position. At Sachsenring, Bagnaia finished third behind Miguel Oliveira and Franco Morbidelli, securing a podium spot.
